A MAC-PHY Cross-Layer Protocol for Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks

چکیده
Cooperative communications is a promising technology that tends to change the conventional access and transmission schemes in wireless networks. By enabling additional collaboration from nodes that otherwise will not directly participate in the transmission, it enables spatial diversity and dramatically improves the performance of the network. In this paper we propose a cross-layer cooperative protocol based on a MAC protocol called CoopMAC [1]–[3] for ad-hoc wireless networks in order to leverage cooperation in both MAC and PHY layer. Exploiting physical layer combining at the receiver, this simple yet efficient scheme illustrates a new paradigm for realistic crosslayer cooperative protocol design for next generation wireless networks. We have evaluated the performance of the proposed protocol by extensive simulations in a large scale wireless adhoc network. Simulation results show that the new protocol significantly improves the network performance in terms of throughput and delay.

Ad hoc wireless network is an autonomous self organizing system of mobile nodes connected by wireless links where nodes not in direct range communicate via cooperation of intermediate nodes. To achieve efficient communication benefits from cooperation, more interactions at higher protocol layers, particularly the MAC (Medium Access Control) and network layers, are vitally required. For this pur...

In this paper, a novel dynamic contention window control scheme is presented to improve the performance and energy efficiency of IEEE 802.11-based CSMA/CA DCF wireless networks operating in ad-hoc mode. The number of competing nodes in physical carrier sense systems has a major influence on the probability of collisions and a subsequent impact on DCF performance and on the energy consumed. A ne...

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) Routing is a routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and other wireless ad-hoc networks. The traditional AODV protocol cannot address to multi rate PHY communications. In this project, we analyze the relationship between data rate, corresponding transmission range and number of hops in AODV protocol and find the optimal data rate for AODV con...
